Workplace Environmental Monitoring

Workplace environmental monitoring and one-off environmental assessment for UK offices — continuous measurement of the indoor parameters that drive occupant complaints, with dashboards, alerts and benchmarking against current standards.

From audit to operation

Workplace environmental monitoring closes the loop between assessment and daily operations

A one-off workplace environmental assessment establishes a baseline at a single point in time. It identifies the present state, benchmarks it against the relevant standards and produces a remediation plan. That is exactly the right starting point — but it is a snapshot.

Continuous workplace environmental monitoring converts that snapshot into an operational dataset. CO₂, PM2.5, PM10, TVOC, temperature and humidity are measured 24/7 at breathing-zone height across the building, displayed on FM-visible dashboards, and alerted on threshold breach. Filter degradation, occupancy creep, a stuck damper or a new emission source is detected within hours rather than at the next consultancy visit.

For organisations targeting WELL certification, BREEAM HEA02 credit, ISO 41001 FM compliance or simply a defensible answer to a future grievance, continuous monitoring is the only complete solution. For investigations into existing complaints, a structured workplace environmental assessment is the right first step — and frequently the trigger that justifies permanent monitoring.

Methodology

From assessment to continuous monitoring

  1. 1

    Stage 01

    Workplace environmental assessment

5–10 day structured measurement programme covering CO₂, PM2.5, PM10, TVOC, formaldehyde, temperature, humidity and thermal comfort, benchmarked against BS EN 16798-1, WHO IAQ Guidelines and WELL.

  2. 2

    Stage 02

    Findings & remediation

Written report with ranked remediation, presented to FM, HR and senior stakeholders.

  3. 3

    Stage 03

    Sensor deployment

Permanent sensor fleet sized to one device per ~150 m² of open-plan or per critical meeting room, with LoRaWAN, Wi-Fi or wired BACnet connectivity.

  4. 4

    Stage 04

    Dashboards & alerts

FM-visible dashboards, threshold alerts to Teams/Slack/FM ticketing, weekly digest emails to occupational health and senior FM.

  5. 5

    Stage 05

    Quarterly review

Calibration cycle, trend review, recommendations for HVAC tuning or further investigation.

Outcomes

What workplace environmental monitoring delivers

Early warning of drift before it becomes a complaint. Documented evidence in any HR, insurance or HSE conversation. Justification for HVAC retrofit business cases — usually a 2–4 year payback on demand-controlled ventilation alone. Credible inputs to WELL Performance verification and BREEAM HEA02 evidence packs.

For occupants, the visible presence of monitoring is itself part of the answer. Once a workforce can see the CO₂ in their own meeting room and the trend of the building over the past week, the conversation shifts from "this building makes me feel ill" to "let's open this window" or "let's escalate this zone". Transparency is half the remediation.

We design, supply, install and operate workplace environmental monitoring fleets across the UK, with hardware-agnostic dashboards that can ingest existing BMS data alongside new sensors. For one-off assessments without ongoing monitoring, the standard 5–10 day deployment remains available.

FAQ

Workplace environmental monitoring — common questions

Workplace environmental monitoring is the continuous measurement of the indoor parameters that influence occupant health, comfort and productivity — CO₂, particulates, VOCs, formaldehyde, temperature, humidity, light and acoustics — across a defined building or zone, with dashboards, alerts and trend analysis. It is the operational extension of a one-off workplace environmental assessment.
