Healthcare Air Quality: HTM 03-01, Filtration and Infection Control

UK healthcare ventilation is governed by HTM 03-01. Beyond compliance, continuous monitoring of pressure, filtration and air-change rates reduces infection risk and protects clinical outcomes.

Standard

HTM 03-01 Parts A & B

Theatre ACH

20–25 air changes/hr

Isolation ACH

≥10, negative pressure

Filtration

HEPA H13 (theatres)

01

Why healthcare air is different

Hospitals concentrate vulnerable patients, infectious aerosols and clinical contaminants in shared envelopes. HTM 03-01 prescribes ventilation strategy by room type — theatres, isolation rooms, pharmacy aseptic suites — but real-world performance depends on commissioning, filter integrity and pressure stability.

02

HTM 03-01 essentials

Theatres. 20–25 ACH, positive pressure, HEPA H13 filtration, validated by annual specialised verification.

Isolation rooms. ≥10 ACH, negative pressure for source-isolation; positive for protective.

General wards. 6 ACH, ePM1 ≥50% filtration.

03

Continuous verification

Pressure differentials, filter loading, CO₂ and PM2.5 should be monitored continuously — annual SVP visits are insufficient for risk-critical environments. IAQ monitoring →
